Wikipedia defines a matrix as a "two dimensional array of numbers." Similar to an excel spread sheet, number are arranged into rows and columns often denoted as a matrix (pronounced "n by m") where n is the number of rows and m is the number of columns. Numbers within the matrix are incased in a pair of square brackets (although parentheses can also be used at times). For example a matrix would look like:
